Textfile much bigger in size than originnally posted Answered

Hi all,

I recently posted this Instructable:

https://www.instructables.com/id/USB-to-Serial-TTL...

I attached the program as textfile (.txt) since it did not accept the '.jal' extension since the program is actually written in JAL. The strange thing is that if you download this textfile it is 106 Mbyte in size! The original text file is only 8 kbyte. I also uploaded a hexfile (.hex) which does not have this problem.

Does anybody know why the Instructable website converts a 8 kbyte textfile to a 106 Mbyte textfile? If I open this file in Notepad++ it opens after quite some time but the contents seems to be OK.

Kind regards,

Rob

Hi, I went to your project and downloaded the file called 16f1455_usb_serial_ttl_1 that is txt file and it is downloaded as 8kb. Is that the file you are referring to? I'm sorry but it isn't showing up as 106 mbyte to me.

Hi Penolopy,
Correct. I tried to delete the file and upload it again but that did not make any difference. So what I did is that I deleted the file again and uploaded a version with the extension _1 so with a different file name. That solved the issue.
But thanks for trying anyway and letting me know.

Sorry you had to go through so much to get the file up there, but I'm glad you were able to find a solution :)

I am shooting into the blue here, but here it goes:
See, you renamed a .jal-file. Nothing bad with that...

BUT: As you uploaded, the website decided, that this file somehow represents an image. (Whyever... This website is technically broken on sooo many levels, i stoppend to comprehend it)
Anyway: Now lets see at the first 5 lines of your txt:

# ImageMagick pixel enumeration: 612,792,65535,rgba
0,0: (65535,65535,65535,65535) #FFFFFFFFFFFF white
1,0: (65535,65535,65535,65535) #FFFFFFFFFFFF white
2,0: (65535,65535,65535,65535) #FFFFFFFFFFFF white
3,0: (65535,65535,65535,65535) #FFFFFFFFFFFF white

The TXT-File is ... phew... 110'831'868 character long on 1'938'821 lines total.

See the first line? It looks like the website converted (and of course failed) to resize/modify/watermark/whatever your txtfile as image and storing the intermediate-conetent as human readable output in the TXT-file.
Again, why a website stores the intermediate output (Basically debug) and not the output itself or nothing if failed, is beyond comperhension on this site...
Also, why it overwrites your TXT... Well... Lets give "because the page is broken" as cause...
Why would it interpret a txt as image? Well... Remember: We are on instructables, where securitybugs dont get adressed altough MANY times posted and reproduced with instruction on how to do so... dont think stuff like "lets imagemagik convert TXT-Files" will be solved in ... any time...

Try zipping it instead of renaming. That would
- Change the content (So ImageMagick doesnt pick up on it)
- Changes the extension to something allowed and recognised
