I am looking for an old recipe for tomato gravy. I know it has canned tomatoes and milk. does this sound familiar?

BTW, Mom is 100% Bohemian and Dad was 100% German soI don't think this dish had anything to do with nationalty. It had a lot to do with the necessity of feeding 5 children and 2 adults.!

As a kid, we had a lot of tomato gravy on bread, especially in the winter. I grew up in the Midwest and we were dirt poor farmers. But I digress. Mom had a garden and canned about 100 quarts of tomatoes every season, She just thickened a quart of her canned tomatoes with flour, added some butter, salt and pepper, and served it ladled over her homemade bread. It was soooo delish! I'm a grandma now, living alone, and make this out of store bought canned tomatoes and put it on store bought bread. It's still delish!

Italian families usually refer to tomato sauce as "gravy". Maybe you were thinking about "vodka sauce" which is a light tomato sauce with the addition of cream and vodka. It is great on pasta. There may be other variations. Good luck.
