Transfer Shows From DVR to PC? Answered

Hello I want to know if there is a cheap/ easy way to transfer recorded shows from my DirecTV DVR to a PC without having to play back the recording and record it onto a DVD through the DVR's video out or record to a PC via playback (some video cards can do this).  The DVR has one USB port on the front and an eSATA port on the back.  Thanks!

Read the user manual for the machine. Your answer is either in there, or it isn't.

The only way is to copy it real time as it plays from the dvr.

Should you happen to find a better way (impossible) then come back here and post it so I can use it.

I'm not familiar with DirecTV's system, but most DVRs video service providers will use proprietary files within their technology to prevent exactly this.  As you mention, the next best way is to encode the feed directly with your video card, but this requires you watching/encoding it in real time.

If it isn't a storage issue, you can send it to your computer monitor and in theory use a screen capture program to grab it at the same time, but it would still be in real time.
