You can in a round about way.

Create a new answer and make the correct edit there then delete the original answer.  You can copy and paste your original answer to your new answer.

Not perfect since it changes your time stamp but it does work.

Done that myself several times. Realized I left out an important step or mauled the grammar, etc.

I tried it and the button(s) didn't load. That is the problem - submit a forum topic as a bug-report.

YOU can! When viewing your question On the right side of the page, there is a box that says: Author Options. Under that, it says "edit question" and "delete question". Click on edit question and you're all set! If you still can't see it, try using firefox. If you are already using firefox and you still can't see it, submit it as a bug report. It must be local to your computer, though, because I can edit my questions.

The reason you can't edit is beyond us mere lowly mortals to comprehend -- I figure it involves extra coding and the wikiformat we use for forums (which the answers engine is based on) doesn't support it. As for what can be done about it -- as others suggest, simply make a new answer and copy pasta.

Well to the why I'm not entirly sure but my guess (although farfetched) is that you can't edit answers because otherwise you could copy answers from other people and give the impression you came up with it first and thus earning "best answer"

Far fetched I know but why do you care about it so much? Just give a new answer if needed. Other then that I never came back upon answers I had given. The only thing would be to elaborate or answer follow up questions...

There have been occasions when it would have been nice to modify an answer because the question changed !
