Washing Machine Motor has a burnt wire Answered

Good day.

I have a whirlpool washing machine. Previously burnt smell emitting then would get hot ..stop working . After cooling down process it would restart. Later stop working at all.

During the lockdown (no technicians working) I decided to conduct some checks.

On the motor there is a small black box with 1 wire at each end (white) The white end coming from the coil has burnt out connected to the black box. Any assistance to rectify? please see pic in attachment.

Although I can't be 1ßß% certain with the image provide I have to state a very similar conclusion to what Jack posted.
Due to corrosion the contact area got compromised, maybe it was a bit loose to being with, who knows.
As a result it finally burnt away enough marteial to get fully faulty.
I had similar issues with motors, microwaves and more....

Here is my way of fixing:
Check if the conact block where the loose wire attaches to has a wire connected on the other end.
Like going to some enamelled wire.
If so then check that there is no contact problem or burn marks on that side.
Get a new slip on contact and pin - they often come in small packs as on-the-fly connectors to splice in.
Use the female parts and some fresh wire to repair the white wires bits.
If long enogh just cut off the damaged part until you get a fresh looking wire and attach the connector.
The male part you cut away the plastic of it has any as well as some other excess.
You want to end with the flat spade and the flat pat leading to the wire connection - if in doubt file it off.
Clean or file clean the existing, damaged connector male on this black junction thingy.
Pre-solder the surface to ensure you get a fully cover (wetting) with the solder.
Do the same on the new male spade connector you prepared - use some popsticle sticks or similar hold it without buring you hands or just pliers if your soldering iron gets hot enough.
Finally bring them together and use the soldering iron to melt through the entire solder cover - the flat spade part should stick out free so you can attach the already fixed white wire to it.
Double check all connection and if fine enjoy ;)

Thanks for your feedback D.
There are no other burnt wires, Yes the wire connects to the other end and that's ok.
I will clean up the male on the box and extend the wire to connect the female spade connector.
Your instructions are clear and well understood.
I am expecting online delivery of items ordered this week and i will proceed as advised.

Good day to you, Jhonny B.

It almost looks like that wire just shook itself loose, and the burned areas are just a consequence of an arc that started, as a gap opened between that connector on the burned white wire, and the post on that little black box... whatever that thing is.

Although, this hypothesis that a wire just shook itself loose, and that this is the only thing wrong, is kind of a best case scenario, and if we are that lucky, then all that needs to be done, is to make that connection clean and solid again.

It would be better if we knew what that little black box is, and what its role is, and what the overall circuit is supposed to look like.

There are wiring diagrams for washing machines, out there, to be found just for the trouble of searching for them.

Also if you know what model Whirlpool washing machine this is, there might exist a PDF manual, containing this circuit diagram.

Or sometimes, including the model number can improve your search results, for pictures and notes uploaded by people previously, especially if that model number is one that people have been, writing about a lot.

If you have a choice between "user's manual" and "service manual," usually it is the service manual that has been written with greater detail, including circuit diagrams and stuff, needed by people who fix these things.

Good day to team players.

Hope all is well. From my side so far so good. Motor wires has been reconnected to the thermal cutout , powered up and works better than before. I could not believe how one wire is so important. Guess was loose a while and just arc out in the end. Wife is happy .. no more washing with hand during lockdown and i am Mr again :-).

Found what the black box is and its uses. Thermal cut-out and controls all run windings.

Yeah. That diagram, in the document you posted, is sort of the big picture I was hoping for.

Now I see the role of the black box. It is a thermal switch of some kind. It is supposed to open, when the motor gets too hot, and interrupt current to the motor windings, thus protecting the motor from melting itself.

Also the thermal switch is connected in series with the neutral wire, so it makes sense that it is a white wire, because white is a color typically used for neutral. The other typical colors, for mains power, being black for line (hot) and green for ground (earth).

You might be wondering if we actually needed to know all this.

Maybe. Maybe not. To me it just feels better when I know what I am looking at.

The way to proceed is to repair the burned connector. Then, if nothing else is broken, I kind of expect it to work.

By the way, now that we know what these various things are, there exists the possibility of testing them individually, like by using a multimeter to check for continuity.

For example, we expect the thermal switch to be closed, near zero ohms resistance, when cold.

Also the motor windings have very low DC resistance too, probably just a few ohms.

But hopefully you will not have to check every little thing, if repairing that connector is all that is needed to make it work.

Thanks for your assistance, time and efforts you have imparted to render assistance. Sure with all the input received gives me knowledge, courage and strengths. Once completed will gave a feedback to you guys.
This problem has me sleeping in the spare room so hopefully in a few days I would be in my comfortable room.

Good Morning Jack,
I have read your response down to details. It's very explainable with in-depth information.
Telling you the truth! I have learned so much from this passage and the links you sent.
A Spanish speaking electrician was the closest video that speaks about the box. (protector technico ) .
I also found out some of the good uses of the internet.(google )

I am still checking for a wiring diagram but will keep you posted .

Other than the burnt connection the motor looks good.
That looks like the connection was loose to the point it arc and burned out the connection to (STARTER SWITCH OR OVERLOAD RELAY) from vibration.
If it is the starter switch or an overload relay, a proper repair man would replace the motor if the machine is not to old. You can buy a new one on line as long as the parts supplier is not closed for covid-19.
There are a couple things you can try until you can get a new motor.
You can try to reattach the wire.
If it is an overload relay you can bypass it but you loose the safe operation.

Thanks for your input. I have connected the wires together to test and Yes the motor runs. I am awaiting my electrical items ordered on line to make a connection back with the overload relay/ thermal cut out for safe operation.
I had no knowledge what this black box was so you guys response cleared things up for me.

Hello Guys,

Wires were connected direct for testing and motor works. Next step is to use the spade connectors and make the connection back to the thermal cut out / black box for safe operations.

Not very much to add to Jack's post.
Only that i often see such push-on-connectors get worse over time: They develop an oxide patina especially in a damp or wet environment (Like a washing machine) and therefore raise the resistance. With the resitance raised, you will loose some power in the form of heat at this connector. Heat often speeds up the oxidation even more... Quickly, the connection gets burnt like yours. Often, i just replace the connector on both (!) sides (Cable female and board male) and after connecting, seal it with spray-on-sealant.

That black box is a thermal cutout switch. See the other white wire coming from the other side of that box? It should go directly to the terminal block on the lower right of the picture. You could try to connect the burned white wire to that other white wire and try to power the motor (see below). The burned white wire is most likely the motor's neutral connection. I'm concerned that the wire seems to be seriously burned in two places, one at the push-on connector and then between that connector and the rest of the wire. Is is possible that it shorted to one of the coil leads above it? Check very carefully by looking at the coil wires just under your thumb in the picture. Look for any discoloration or sign of overheating. If you don't see any of that then try and power it up.
