What are all the components one needs to download onto their laptop to begin Java programming? Answered

I've been trying to get the basic Java program 'Hello World' to work, but I can't process it, I have a sleu of texteditors, and typed the command properly but it won't function. Can somone list everything that I need to do on my laptop, including components and steps, I have a microsoft Dell inspiron? Thanks.

I would advise the use of BlueJ. It is very basic but it allows some concepts to be represented visualy with something called an "object bench". Command line tools are not really very helpful unless you know exactly what you want to do. If instead your looking for a safe environment I would definitely recommend BlueJ which can be downloaded here and there's a brief tutorial here to get you started.

It's been a long since I've written any Java programs, but here goes...

You're trying to compile the code, first, yes? You can compile directly from a shell (DOS prompt), assuming you have the Java Development Kit (JDK) installed.

However, it's probably easier to use an IDE (integrated development environment) that will launch the compiler without typing out the path, name, etc. Here's a link with some open source Java IDEs. You'll still need the JDK...
