A lot of years have passed since I interned for a civil engineering company but when I finished up, the owner told me I was one of the best interns he had ever had. I had three rules my old man hammered into my head:
1. Keep busy. If you don't have something to do, ask for more work.
2. Ask questions. If you don't understand, ask and thank whomever answers your question.
3. Remember the three P's; be Prompt, be Punctual, and be Polite.

+1. I followed those rules on my placement/intern without realising I had. 2 was especially important for me, I was working in a field (software) which I previously had no experience and as long as you ask questions intelligently and write down the answer so you never have to ask it again people were more than happy to answer every question you had.

+2.  Only thing I can add is to cheerfully do ANY task they give you.  You never know what will come from what you do.

Volunteer to fetch the coffee and lunch. I like that in an intern.

Pay attention, learn as much as you can and apply what skill / talent you have to the best of your abilities.
You're essentially cheap-labour in return for experience, so get as much knowledge & experience (and free-stuff) as you can.
