What are the possible defects that makes a newton's cradle function ineffectively?
I have made a newton's cradle but it didn't function well. I made use of 5 billiard balls, nylon string and wooden base. What suggestions can you make for my newton's cradle to work effectively? Thank you.

Pictures needed.
The main problem is probably a weak framw, or your balls are held wrongly.

Regarding the correct way to hold these balls:
;-)This quote is of course from the AC/DC song, "Big Balls", from their 1976 Album, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,

Show some pictures if you have them... there could be a variety of reasons.
Don't feel too bad. Mythbusters attempted this with massive wrecking balls. They failed miserably.

How is the string attached to the billiard balls?

Your balls need to be very accurately strung; check the diameters precisely and space the centres of the nylon at exactly the same distance apart.
Thinner nylon and longer lengths should help.

Ofcourse your balls must be the same size, so that momentum is properly conserved when you smash them together.
Makes your eye2s water doesn't it ?
