What can I use to drive 7 x 2w 5cm speakers? Answered

Hi all,

I'm making a sound installation using 7 of these speakers:

http://www.rapidonline.com/Audio-Visual/5cm-Mini-speaker-with-plastic-diaphragm-73504

I need to output sounds (just stereo, for now, I have no idea how I would run a 7 channel set up) from my soundcard on my laptop which just has fairly standard outputs i.e. phono and jack.

I'm not sure what I need to bridge these two things, obviously you would usually use an amp but these speakers are only 2w so I was thinking they probably don't need a proper amp. Also most amps don't have enough outputs for 7 speakers.

I need whatever it is to be as small and cheap as is possible.

Thank you in advance!

Dolly x

Bunch of little LM380s will do it, or you can buy small amp kits from Rapid too. try 70-1086 2.5W stereo amp kit.

Thank you again for your quick response.

So I would need 4 of those little 2.5W amps to run 7 speakers, correct? How would I split the single signal going from say a phono out to 4 of these, can I do this using wires alone?

Apologies for my lack of knowledge!

Yes, just run your left channels to all the left inputs etc.

Incidentally, you MAY find that your laptop can drive 7 channels, or at least 5+1, with a different setup on the soundcard in the laptop - then the mic input is turned into outputs instead.

Wire the amp's inputs to a single 3.5mm jack.

Hi mpilchfamily...

Could you expand a bit. Do you mean the amps that steveastrouk has linked to? Would I be able to wire 4 of these amps to a single 3.5mm jack?

If so can you explain in a bit more detail how I would go about that (link to components needed etc?)

Thank you!

Yes the amps Steve mentioned can all share the same 3.5mm connector. Wire all the left channels together, the right channels together and the ground channels together. The left channel gets soldered to the tip of the jack, the right to the ring of the jack and the ground to the base of the jack.

Look for schematics for 2.5W amps. That will give you the components list you need. You can go with single channel designs or dual channel designs. Either way it will use about the same components.
