What is the best way to waterproof a hole in a plastic box? Answered

Picture is showing a small polycarbonate box with a 10 mm hole in the top surface. I need to find a way to cover this hole with a waterproof and elastic patch. It needs to hold tight for a minimum of 3 years of daily use in sun and water.

I was thinking of covering the hole with a small rubber repair patch for bicycles. Not the self-adhesive types but with proper glue. Will this work or are there better alternatives?

You can try to make a PC patch and to "glue" it in place using PC dissolved in either dimethylformamide or 1,4-dioxane.
There are some commercial glues for plastic but I am not sure how good they work with PC.
Getting something flexible on there that is supposed to last, maybe even with pressure onit will be a very hard thing to do.
Only proper way I could come up with:
Make two stainless steel rings to fit around the hole.
Evenly place 8 to 12 holes into each ring.
Use the now finnished (after deburring of course) rings as a template to punch small hole through a piece of rubber - prefeable the UV and chemical resistant type.
Now get some aircarft sealant - the brown, stinky stuff and put a thin layer on the box where the rubber will get contact.
The stuff is quite sticky so I suggest to place the rubber onto the ring and to push some screws through to hold it in place - makes it far easier to get it all aligned ;)
Once you are satisfied with the fit secure all screws quite tight and enjoy.
For the screws I suggest to use M4 or similar in stainless steel with nylock nuts.

A tire patch will work on a camera box if all you are doing is keeping your camera dry in the rain, but it can fail miserably if you drop it in a river or lake.

What you are looking for needs to be UV rated, places like Australia and between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn need massive UV protection.

In Canada or Norway; something that might last a year, may not last a week between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

So where and how will it be used?

It will be used worldwide so some kind of UV-protection will be neccesary. Do UV-rated repair patches exist?

Damn forgot the trusted duct tape - there is nothing it can't fix...
But tape for something that is supposed to last a few years?
Might need some tape like this one day for my survival pack ;)
