What tools would I require to change the timing belt and water pump in a 98 honda accord 4 cylinder? Answered

What tools would I require to change the timing belt and water pump in a 98 honda accord 4 cylinder 110k miles on it? What would I need and how long would it take? I have this toolset http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00939094000P?prdNo=24? and a 1 / 2 ratchet as well, a 4 ton - jack and jackstands.

I only make about 150 a week (I'm a student) so the 750 the dealer wants is a tad too ridiculous. I have moderate experience doing car-work myself. (Brake pad/rotor changes, struct replacement, oil changes, distro cap/rotor changes.

The reason I'm thinking about doing this is due to a leak which may be the water pump or heater hose. (I'm changing the heater hose this week)

If you could description of required tools and recommended tools to make it easier that'd be great.

.  If you will be replacing the timing belt, you will, as caarntedd points out, need a manual. Well worth the $20-50 (cheaper used). More than likely, replacing the belt itself won't be too difficult, it will be getting all the other stuff out of the way so you can get to the belt that you need the manual for.
.  You might be able to do the water pump w/o a manual, but it's not the easy job it was 35 years ago; some can be downright tricky. And you still need to know how much to torque the bolts.
.  A good torque wrench is a must, especially when working on Aluminum engines. The manual will tell you if the one you have is too big. You should be able to rent the proper wrench, if need be.

I'm trying to find the tool that locks both the crankshaft and camshaft. It installs between the two and spreads itself out locking the 'timing' in place. Very easy to screw up 1 degree of timing or so without this tool.

It is a good idea to replace the timing belt along with the water pump. It seems to be this way with most Japanese cars. I had the same thing done to my Mazda B2200 pick up truck. Like everyone else before me said find a manual for your make and model. Once a friend and I had to remove a fender to replace a water pump in a Reliant K car (crappy car if you ask me). It is not going to be an easy task but if you have the time and a place to do it go for it! Let us know how you did.

Hi Phill, how did the strut replacement go?

It sounds to me like you have too many tools for the job. I would recommend a workshop manual for your make and model.
Also search this site and do a bit of googling.

Do you mean fan belt or timing belt?
The fan belt is visible on the front of the motor, the timing belt is usually inside and is a little trickier.
