The Mayan calender says "the world is going to end" as much as December 31st does. When you replace your calender at the end of the year are you crippled in fear of the imminent destruction of earth? They just figured they'd still be here to make the Lunar and Venusian calculations for a new one.

Oh, the saved is not part of the verse.

The world has been around for billions of years and will be for billions more.
However your life is much more fleeting and fragile. If your life ended tomorrow what would you do today?

About what I've been doing today: hosting a music party.

Depends on how you define "the world".
As Kelseymh says - its virtually guaranteed to go poof in several billion years because that's the life cycle of our sun, after which it will go supernova and engulf the earth in fiery plasma. Yum!
There are a lot of reasons 2012 is thought to be the end...google it.
As for 'when' it will happen - if we keep letting the financial giants push government around and then claim its the governments fault when the economy fails...then it will be a lot sooner than you think, and not because of why you think.

Um, the sun is a middling-mass main sequence star. It will expand to a red giant, with a "diameter" somewhere between the orbits of Earth and Mars, stay that way for a billion or so years, then contract to a white dwarf. No supernova, unfortunately -- those are reserved for stars with greater than ~5-ish solar masses.

Thank you for the nomenclature update!
The idea being, a sun going from 1 AU to virtually none (or negative :S)...
it's gonna get hot.

I can't talk correctly today (read: type).
I meant to say "distance from the sun going from 1..."

On the day you pass. 2012 is just more of the same patent BS that the infotainment industry has used forever to control people, by undermining their confidence in the future with dire predictions and pat solutions (which always serve a tiny percentage of the population and cost the other 98% to exact). "Sky is falling...Stay tuned...we'll make it all better..." It's the first trick of the trade for big brother.
Sadly, with TV and the 60s generation management that has controlled the TV industry for the last few decades, the problem has only grown worse, since, as a generation, they are masters of manipulation, first slitting the metaphorical throats of their parents generation, then slitting the throats of the generation that followed them.
BTW, note that the ~2% that ultimately gets served by their paradigm is usually tied in one way or another to the infotainment industry.

It'll end when it ends. Stop worrying about it and live your life.
Answer 10 years ago
Wow, thank you for saying so! I agree, people just shouldn't worry about all that stuff and be happy.
By the way, just because the Mayan calendar (or was is Aztec; I'm not sure) ends in 2012 and there is a movie about it, that doesn't mean the Earth actually will end in 2012.

mass of people: but... but... but... the T.V. said I should be scared! So I am scared... I don't know why but they had alot of different people say that it's true. I sure hope the T.V. will tell me what to do!
The individual is smart the mass is stupid...
And if you're wondering what the solution from the T.V. will be... buy more stuff it'll make you happy! :D
So I totally agree with you, if it happends it happends in this case there is nothing we can do about it. But people who are scared will believe and do anything an authority says. And the authority says "buy buy buy!!!"
Answer 10 years ago
Haha, that's how most people really do act; it's just sad...

The Mayan calendar say's it's all over in 2012. Since they did the calendar in what? 56BC, I think by the time they got to up to 2012 they said "forget this crap,we'll stop here"

The world has already ended. Our minds are not able to accept that fact and are creating our own realities that we live thru. THe people living in insane asylums have figured that out and are trying to contact us thru our illusions.
Answer 10 years ago
Wow, that sounded suprisingly smart

It'll end when I have something intelligent to say

If the world ends in 2012, I wasted my entire life in school....

Not in 2012 but eventually. If we have bad luck, this could be our undoing:
"Current measurements suggest the Andromeda Galaxy is approaching us at 100 to 140 kilometers per second. The Milky Way may collide with it in 3 to 4 billion years, depending on the importance of unknown lateral components to the galaxies' relative motion. If they collide, individual stars within the galaxies would not collide, but instead the two galaxies will merge to form a single elliptical galaxy over the course of about a billion years"

most certainly not in 2012

Approximately 6 billion years from now, give or take.
