When will there be a Site Updates posting about the new "Like" button? Answered

So, since yesterday, I think, there's been a new little icon on every forum topic, as shown in the attached image (or just look up above this text).  What's the deal?  What are we supposed to do with this, especially those of us who do not have, and do not ever want, a Facebook account?

Shouldn't the author of this new feature have written up a forum topic for Site Updates?  That's why the forum was created, wasn't it?  If it doesn't get used, then you'll just get more and more of these questions from me, and you don't want that, do you?

The forums are retiring in 2021 and are now closed for new topics and comments.

Above the text of this forum I do not see any "Like" button, instead I see a blue bar that says "Access Denied!"

Could you do a screen capture?  That's weird, but it might actually indicate something.

I get the same sort of thing at work, where facebook is blocked. Except mine just looks like a horrible bug.

Thanks!  And RMS got it right.  I wonder if I'bles new Staff member can cool up a cool little JS fragment to test for that on the client side, and avoid putting up the banner at all.  To me, that "Access Denied" banner could be pretty misleading, and certainly detracts from the site.

When I click it, it takes me to the Facebook login screen. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that "Access Denied" happens if you're accessing Instructables from a place where Facebook is blocked, like a school. Am I right?

Just a guess, but I think the logic is sound.

Yeah, I tried going into the actual facebook site and it was blocked ... so your logic worked.

.  Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! As the site becomes more complicated it becomes more difficult to spot minor changes (this one was easy to spot). Plus, it takes time to investigate. It gets frustrating when you know that all it would take is a short post from Robot to explain what's going on.
.  Robot, help us help you. Keep us informed so we can help the new and/or  confused users. Please!

I don't mind it too much, but it would have been nice if they posted something about it. Remember the days when Instructables wasn't associated with every one?

Any way, Rachel, if you're reading this, keep up the good work, you're doing an awesome job!

See the comments from LoneWolf and RMS above.  Apparently Kiteman is right, and it's for the Facebook crowd.  Bleagh.

Yes I saw the icon, but the code looks like a favorite.

It's at the top of Instructables as well.

That makes more sense, since it will (presumably) drive traffic to the site (I'm assuming that, when people click the button, all their "friends" will get a message to say go look at this cool project.

Do these buttons exist / work for non-members as well?

Are similar buttons planned to let projects be tweeted and dug (digged?)?

Kiteman, take a look at LoneWolf's comment below about "access denied."  If you're willing, could you try using #1 Son's account to look at this, and see if the Like button is still there?

Thanks, Kiteman/Roger!  In the mean time, I think RMS nailed it.
