Where would I begin if I wanted to create a commercially available gadget (Think home automation)? Answered

I have an idea for a gadget that I would like to market. Lets say it a home automation system with a touchscreen where you can play bluetooth music, read Rss feeds etc. Where would I begin to make it? I have indepth experience in programming but I don't understand what system I would build this upon. I doubt I would go out and buy a raspberry pi and design it on that because that is their own hardware and OS that is not mine? I fee like an Arduino is not powerful enough for a clean and intricate UI with a touch screen. Does anyone know what system/board I would use for this idea?

There's NOTHING to stop you integrating a Pi into some novel hardware. People buy-in components to create products all the time.

There is a company out there right now that will help you develop, make, and market your product for a slice of the profits.Visit Quirky.com and throw your hat into the ring.

Unless you have the necessary skills and facilities to fabricate a prototype your either going to pay someone to do that for you or your going to have to gain those skills.

This means starting with small things and building skill, knowledge and experience bit at a time.

AFAIK there really isn't a short cut (That tends to be why most of the regular responders here are relatively older.)

SO - You need to create a specification for your product with as much detail about the functionality as you can manage.

This will then inform you about how you might go about turning it into reality (or inform someone else) - vague ideas are of no use to anyone.

Systems like that already exist. It would be hard to create a similar product and then be competitive in that market place. Companies who make such products put millions into the research and development of the product. Not to mention months if not years worth of man hours. They also have the facilities and relationships to have the product mass produced.

But to get started you will need to put together a team of people with expertise in the areas you are lacking in. Your prototype can certainly be built upon a Pi or Beagle Board but to keep costs of manufacturing down you may have to have your own imbedded system developed. So you will need people with the hardware knowledge to build the system so you can create your UI.

Your best bet is to research if something like this has been patented. If not get the patent for it and start talking with companies that deal in home automation to see if they would be willing to develop and market the idea.
