  • What other files can I add to an Instructable?
  • How do I add videos, what kind of sources can I use, what can I put in a video?
  • How can i get help with my writing skills? If I make something and take pictures, can somebody else write the words for me?
  • What is a collaboration, and how do I do one?
  • How do I find an Instructable?
  • How do I format my text apart from bold and italic?
  • How do I add notes to my pictures?
  • Can somebody please explain this licensing thing?
  • How do i report a bug or broken link?
  • Can I contact The People In Charge directly?
  • Can anybody here help me with a patent?
  • How do i enter a comnpetition?
  • How are competitions judged?
  • Can I win a prize if I am under 18 / abroad?
  • What's with all the K'Nex??
  • How do I advertise on the site?
  • What's the proper name for a person who posts Instructables?
  • How do I make a suggestion about a competition or the site? Who do I send it to?

Reply 13 years ago

Oh, man, good question. Kids love common misspellings so "teh" is boardspeak for "the" It's like the word "pwned." If that makes sense to you, all will become clear.

Thanks, I didn't want to assume anything (it did seem as though that was how it was being used) and I can never tell if it is an acronym (LASER, NASA, TTFN etc) or what. Thanks again.
Now I can sleep tonight :-)

And of course I noticed a bit of "British speak" here, so I assume a number of the group are from the UK. Ta !

It's not called "British Speak", it's called "English".

Sorry, I have a habit of indiscriminately drawing from other sources without making it known: I called British slang, British Speak (from the novel "1984"'s use of " -speak" I saw someone use "sod off" and a few other terms that would not be used nor understood by the average North American (thankfully I correspond with a few friends in the UK, a few by voice, and I must say, I can understand the blokes better then some of the ladies :-) (they seem to slur the words more maybe?) No offense intended....

I'm ribbed for using the words "Love" to informally thank a woman and "mate" referring to thanking a stranger. I.e "Cheers mate." To a shop assistant. Or "Sod off" to cold callers ;-P

Completely understood. It took me nearly a year before I was comfortable with my Birmingham friend calling me "mate" *lol*

Just pointing out that it's pretty common practice for the "About" links to be at the bottom of the page.

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to write those out. I've already written up the instructable-creation issues in the draft, but it's good to hear about questions about the rest of the functionality. Wow, K'nex can be a part of the FAQ?

Oh:

  • I published my Instructable, and it's on my list as published, but it hasn't appeared on the main "recent" list. Why not?

Hey, the whole site is riddled with k'nexers, like deathwatch beetle. They might as well get into the FAQ. Besides, it's a question I was asked about the site, by a ten-year-old!

A FAQ is only any good if people read it. Will they? L

If it's given an interesting logo or name (Say, Robot scratching his head, looking puzzled, with a big caption: You want to know what?) a prominent location on the welcome screen, then probably.

An FAQ would be pretty great! It would decrease definitely help out the new users, and them going through the hassle of posting forum topics, and PMing users about certain questions. I second W-Burg's points as well. I like those questions.

How to add images, videos, maybe code? Update on the "be nice" policy : ) What to post, and what not to post in the forum area. (Meaning if they should advertise their I-ble in the forums) How to enter contests What to categorize their Instructable (KNEX only as not liable) Give an understanding of how long it takes your Instructable to go into "Recent", as well as views. (Because don't the views go to a different cache, and then come to here?) How to contact Instructable workers, email, PM, snail-mail. More to come...

BB, it took me a few tries too, and I am kind of used to different forms of uploading/confirmation. They have one extra "step" then some places I have posted to.

I know one of the first things I noticed was that I could post to all forums, but one could also "join" groups. Someone has since explained it to me, as I am more familiar with "groups" one joins so they can post. Here it didn't matter, so one of my questions was: what is the advantage to "joining" a group.

All we need now is someone to do a instructible explaining why one should visit the FAQ before asking a question ;-)

Reply 13 years ago

I think we'll need a FAQ to tell you to visit the FAQ! What about a "loaded word" search. Say if the topic/bug has certain words in it, it would tell them about the FAQ?

Hmm, or a place to just "search the FAQ" for keywords....but yes, I have seen some of the scripting behind this...it may get a bit complicated though.

I'm assuming it would be on basic non-site related questions, as most of the other questions are answered by the "How to make a good instructable" instructable.

Cool. I started doing instructable-related questions first and will include some profile questions as well.

I think it could help...things like how to add an instructable to a group, how to do image tags, what if my ible doesn't show up instantly? How to change your profile picture, etc.
