analogue destructive interference device?
i was hoping to learn how to make a machine that would allow me to put it down, push a button and no longer hear beyond it. it would be ideal for doing interviews at conventions. I was also hoping to have it made so theres no computers involved, just older electronics, so it would, in theory use less power.

Think again and focus on how electrical and magnetic fields work ;)

Now, that will silence anyone, mate
Some clowns might get insane, though.

Hello,
I asked a question mildly related to this a while back; some of the answers may be useful to you.

The reality is that if we KNEW how to do this, we would have, patented it, and be watching the sunsets from the fantail of our yacht.

And they park their boat, where?

Best way to make it work is to put a speaker pointing away from each ear and 180' out of phase with the sounds approaching your head.
It will take experimentation with the microphone pickups, because the ideal position is closer to the ear, but to cancel a sound the pickup needs to be ahead in time to the speaker.. Meaning further out then the speaker from the ahead..
Maybe a laser watching reflecting Brownian micro particle movement could anticipate incoming sound waves before the speaker needs to prep a phased reaction.

Your idea is inside out - a single sound-cancelling device would create an island of silence, not a privacy bubble from which sound cannot escape.
If you were inside that island of silence, your own voices would be silenced as well.
Instead, I would go with a pair of very directional microphones, one pointing at each participant's mouth. Rather than silencing the surrounding sounds, you'd just be ignoring them.

You just described The Cone of Silence from the TV show Get Smart.

Or, if you're recording for a pod-cast, and visuals aren't important, try a commentator's set-up:

I doubt this is possible for you - essentially because you asked the question.
BUT I do know that there have been experiments with sound cancelling usinf anti phase speakers. You may be familiar with sound cancelling headphones, well they do work for some very regular sounds like aircraft engines but they don't work for rapidly changing sound waveforms.
So the hush hod is a great idea but not very practical to implimate.
