I personally do it to see when the emails about my new instructables go out to my subscribers

Its a new form of self stalking which has always been a problem for unusually paranoid people.
"Hello police? I want to report that I am being followed, Well, I'm following myself but its not me because if it was me I would know but since I don't know then it has to be another me. "

I started following me shortly after I learned that it was possible to follow members. There was a discussion about it which is how I learned but it was so long ago I don't remember the specifics. I think there was a discussion about making it not possible to do.
So really everyone should have at least one person following them. But many do not. Its like voting in contests, everyone should have at least one vote, their own, but it was surprising how many people didn't even vote for their own instructables in contests.

Yes. Try typing your own question into the search box and you'll discover that lots of people already figured it out before you. It is an excellent way to confirm that comments, new I'bles, etc. are actually being sent out to your subscribers.
