Depending on the amount of cream you want to process then any cleanable container from a jam jar to a 5 gallon plastic barrel will do simple arrange for it to be tilted so the contents slop from side to side.

baffles inside help to coagulate the fat but mess up the easy cleaning.

Making enough butter to satisfy a family is a VERY time consuming task and needs a LOT of cream on a very regular basis. This is why our ancestors

a) worked from dawn to dusk and longer and

b) why they dies so young (with other factors as well)

There will be when you've written it...

If you're going to make your own butter churn, I would try making it from plastic, as it is much easier to keep contamination-free than untreated wood.

A few moments on google taught me that the secret is not in the container, but in the paddle - a long handle, with a paddle on the end that is as wide as the container. The paddle meeds to have gaps in, either because holes are drilled in it, or it is made of slats.

Try a spaghetti jar with a potato-masher in it...
