Depends on the surface.
If it is polished and not too dirty the old window mix of methylted spirit and ammonia works great with a micro fibre cloth.
If really dirty a hand held steam cleaner helps to loose up most goo.
For wire brushed surfaces I use the same as above but in hard cases some aluminium foil and coke (not the diat one, the regular, full sugar variety).
Works great on rusted chrome too.

Washing soap on a cloth - Run all over.

Wipe down with a damp cloth and leave to dry.

You can get stainless cleaners but in my experience they are no better,.
