1) Can you type text into the "Google custom search" box? If so, just do that and hit [Return].
2) Does the Graphical Search link work for you? If so, use it. That accesses I'bles older, homebrew indexing. It's not as comprehensive as the Google version, but it works.
3) Use Google directly. From www.google.com, type in your search, and include site:instructables.com in the search text. That will give the same results (minus things from the past day or two), as I'ble's Google-based search.

nothing works. I can't get a text cursor to appear.

Ah, I see. I've run into that issue on other Web sites, even with Firefox. Even though there's no cursor, have you tried clicking in the box and just typing? Google, for example, occasionally has an "invisible cursor" glitch for me, but I can still type. If the whole thing (text box and all) doesn't work, then at least option 3 is available (if a tad kludgy). It's a good thing to learn though, as you can use it for any Web site, even if they don't have their own searching box.

Today's lesson is:
Use Mozilla Firefox instead.

(yes it's sucks if you're using work's facilities, but you shouldn't really be doing that..)
