Hi, if I choose to create my own website and then later on change my mind and want to hire a professional, will my web address be transportalbe to the new site the professionals created? As you can see I am a complete rookie at this :-)

thankyou for your replies, it was pretty much what i expected. i was going to play around on a free site building my own site and use the domain address i have. but was concerned it would be locked in and not moveable. yes frollard i agree everything has a price :-) cheers to you both.

Sure can :)

The domain name you use now is pointed to a fixed ip address somewhere on the internet. That ip address can change with a simple configuration change; often it takes a while for the change to propagate through redundant servers and caches with old info (a few hours to a few days)
(that's the quick version: Really you ought to have changes on the webserver saying "I am blablabla.com" and changes on the domain name server saying "blablabla.com is found at xyz ip address")

+1

Some ISPs may charge to move the domain name away from them.  Not much, but it's worth checking.
