could someone help me modify my radio to support MP3?
It will be used as a portable speaker eventually with a different body and a few extra speakers.

Given the cheap cost of mp3 players, these days, it would be easiest to simply 'implant' an mp3 player that can fit inside your radio and hook the output to your radio's loudspeakers.

+1. Exactly what I'd do.. The trick would be finding room and mounting so the controls (and usb port) are accessible and making sure that the mounting location maintains some degree of water resistance.

mp3 is a compressed-format, you need processing power & software to decode it.
