No, of course not.  You can delete the image, but you will "damage" the Instructable since it will reference a file which no longer exists.

When you try to delete, you should get a warning message about exactly this.
If you proceed, then the Instructable will be left with a "dangling pointer", which will presumably show up either as the grey hand or some other indicator.

you will?
Okay that's a new one for me.
I thought that when you upload a photo, it uploads it to the instructables servers.
I may just have to test this out.

It does upload to the I'bles server.  And when you delete it, it removes the image file from the I'bles server.  But the software doesn't (or at least, didn't used to) go through and find all the places where the image was used.

Okay, but if the photo  was up loaded to the sever than  the sever would have its own copy. If it was deleted the one of two things would have to happen.
1. sever checks the computer the picture was loaded from every time it loads the picture for display (unethical and not always possible)
2. computer notafies server that picture has been deleted and server deletes picture.  (Server has its own copy to do with as it pleases,{figuratively speaking} Computer must be programed to to notify server.

So can you explain why this happens?
(If I missed anything let me know.)

I think you've misunderstood Karroo's original question.  He's asking whether he can delete an image from his Instructables Image Library if that image is in use in some I'ble (or forum topic, or whatever).

You seem to have interpreted the question as referring to the original local version that was uploaded to I'bles at some time in the past.  Sorry for the confusion!
