does anyone know what material is used to line steel glass cleaner cans? Answered

i have sprayaway glass cleaner cans which i was hoping to turn into a backpacking stove like the penny stove. using alcohol as the fuel...but they turn out to be lined with some sort of material on the inside. i was wondering what that material is? does it need to be removed to make the stove? and if so...is there an easy and safe way to do so?

If your worried about it possibly being toxic then burn it off outside first. A propane torch will do the job and scorch off anything, including the outside paint which is probably more toxic than the inside coating. Be aware though that once its clean it will rust if exposed to moisture. Keep it sealed in a zip lock bag.

I think they use a varnish or plastic that's sprayed inside cans(to prevent corrosion) these days.

Best thing I can suggest is a test. Alcohol is *probably ok, but it never hurts to be sure. Since the can is steel (or aluminum), it's not like you're going to damage the can itself, and if alcohol isn't a solvent for the coating, then all the better, since you may or may not get your hands on 100% alcohol to fill it with (often diluted with a bit of water)...
