I was able to get the first WiFi program running (basic net connection) and then started getting the error messages. Rebooted computer and error continued. It compiled with no errors.

unplugged and reconnected.

Using v1.8.1 of Arduino IDE on win10 machine

Sounds like your Arduino software just can't find the board. Do you have the correct board and port selected under the Tools menu? Are you using a Feather Huzzah or a different board? Some other boards require a combination of button presses to put them in bootmode (open to receiving a new program).
