help with intermittent internet when router is hooked up and a laptop that won't display wesites when connected
I have two problems. The first is that my home computer has internet which is working fine. I am trying to install a new router and it installs and cinfigures successfully but then my internet connection becomes intermittent or non existent any help?
Second, my laptop will not display websites or e-mail. It will ping and find any site but not allow them to be dipslayed. Any ideas?

Specifically check DNS settings. I would suggest using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers. Also:

Ugh, I hate setting up networks. It's never the same twice and it rarely works right the first time. I just start fiddling with the settings until something gives. After every couple tries I reset the router and start over from scratch.
If you still have the old router plug it back in and copy down it's settings and then replicate them in the new router's settings.

Also when you do reset everything make sure you are unplugging all connections and power cords and turning off all wifi antennas. Then restart the cable router, when it's up plug in the cable. When it's up turn on the router, when it's up connect it to the cable router. After that is complete plug in or turn on your wifi to a single device. I used to have to do this occasionally and it turned out that eventually the cable router from the cable company went bad.

There is always the possibility that the router itself is bad. Quality control is not what it used to be and defective stuff does get out.

on the internet connection. Call your provider and they will help you set it up right. There are some settings that they know will work and can point you right to them.
Don't bother trying to set up the laptop until your connection problems are fixed.

Thanks. We have talked to Shaw and they are saying everything is fine so I guess I will call again and start over with them. Wish me luck!
