how can I make a dc motor spin with less rpm's to get started? Answered

I took a DC motor from a electric mower and want to use it for a wind generator. But I need it to spin with less starting rpm's. How can I do this? I guess what I am trying to say is I need it to start moving in about 3-5 mph winds vs's 13-15 mph winds.

A suitable set of gears or pulley and belt to increase the speed to the generator.

Agreed steeper pitch will get you started quicker, but there is very little if any power in wind less than about 7 mile an hour. Anything you gain on start up you will lose in higher winds as your blades stall. You have to build to suit your 'average' wind speed for your area.

bigger or steeper blades will grab more energy and start it spinning sooner...the cut-in speed is proportional to the ratio between the blade diameter and the rated motor wattage.
