Test it with a multimeter where you have it connected to the controller's circuit board. When you push the button, the reading on the multimeter should change from "open" or a high resistance, to shorted (close to zero ohms).
If it does that, you should be safe to plug it in and try it out.
If it's shorted all the time, then you have trouble. Fix it before plugging it in!

...just don't take it online - they can detect the led-to-trigger-jumper trick and you will get your system and gamertag banned :(
