Diagnose your existing drive:
What do you mean by "bad" - what does work, what doesn't work?
You want to consider that it might just be dirty.

If you have to, it's probably cheaper to replace it than buy an external drive, which you could do and plug it in via USB.

What you're looking for is a "DVD-RW" drive. The best ones will handle all the common computer disk formats -- DVD, DVDROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, CD, CDROM, CD-R, CD+R, and CD-RW. (I haven't yet seen one that also does blue-ray, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's available.) You could replace your existing internal drive, or for a bit more money you could get one in an external cabinet that plugs into your machine via USB. Note that I'm presuming your diagnosis is correct, and that it really is the drive that has gone bad. You might want to ask someone with more experience to check it out to make sure you don't just have a loose cable or a software configuration problem. If they determine the drive really is bad, you can ask them to help you select a replacement drive as well.
