After you type your request in the google search box and click go, the results page that pops up has an orange "graphical search" link next to the search box. Click on that and the related instructables will appear.
Instructables is paying Google to use their search engine and database indexing software. The search is limited to just the I'bles Web site, but you have all the power (and all the annoying limitations) of Google's search syntax.
If you look closely at the search box in the top right, it says "Google custom search", and will search the instructables site. On the results page, there are some more search/filter options.
