Whatever you do, make sure, that it doesn't not only protect from scratches (like a sock would do) but protects the front (the screen) from punctual pressure. So make sure it has something flat and sturdy in front - solid cardboard, some metal or plastics.

On the other hand you could quilt a pouch cover although this offers little protection from external pressure.
You can hollow out the pages of an old book to fit the kindle inside - a hard back book will offer good protection.
You can slip it into an old sock.
