Usually downloaded with a dongle to your interested circuit using your PC with two to 5 wires attached to your IC.

There are also zip insert sockets that program a microprocessor IC which is then plugged into the circuit. these are not soldered because they must be removed and placed into the zip programmer for each software change.

Free side note !!

I found these erase the CPU first an then reprogram them but if you disable the erasing cycle and successively program the same file over and over the CPU will be able to function ie run at a LOWER voltage which can be an advantage for portable applications.

Though today I prefer to use the in circuit program method because I can use the soldered IC already in the final circuit ie no need to transfer the CPU making the possibility of upin fatigue bending and and falling off.

The LM555N is a Famous IC which is only programmable by attaching external passive components (R,C,D) to make it perform desirable electronic functions see the attached application PDF and ten minute timer for details.

There must be thousands of videos out there for you to peruse until you grow old.

A 555 is a timer chip. It isn't in any way "programmable"

Your using "integrated circuit" to describe anything you can "program", that isn't correct. Only CERTAIN types of IC (chip) are programmable - usually microcontrollers, or logic devices like PALS and GALS.
