I have repaired many remote controlls in my days working at a cable tv company and other times when my own remote control dies. The main thing that goes wrong with them is they get soda and liquids spilled into them and food crumbs. What I do is carefully pry off the back and remove battery. Usually, there are no screws holding them together, just plastic snap-grooves all around the edges. You will likely put some gouges and scratches into the remote case while trying to pry off the rear cover.... just expect it and live with the scratches. Once you have the remote apart.... the keypad will usually be covered with a circuit board that you may need to unscrew and carefully pry off without flexing it too much. Then just remove the rubber membrane that is the actual switch. Wash this rubber membrane off with water gently to get all the GOO out of it. Dont forget to clean off the little pads on the CIRCUIT BOARD too! (the ones that make contact with the rubber membrane-pads. Have some paper towels and q-tips and alcohol while doing this. Re assemble the whole thing and usually that will fix it. If not, then put a note up on craigslist for a REMOTE WANTED. Someone probably has one laying around they will give you. By the way, what kind of remote is it.... maybe someone on this website has one they will send you?

BONUS ANSWER: heres a trick to keep your remotes from getting all gooey with spilled soda. Just put your remote into a clear plastic baggie or saran wrap. The light beam will shine out just fine, and the keys will not get messed up while you are eating cheato's.
