I don't know where you live but where I live getting large barrels for free is practically a thing of the past. Used plastic and steel barrels are most always sold to recyclers. The recyclers usually clean and re-sell both the plastic and steel barrels or they shred them and sell the scrap in bulk.
That said, you might be able to find a small restaurant or garage that will sell you a few for a reasonable price.
