Flash memory goes bad. There's no way to tell when it will go bad, some flash drives have gone bad before they were even sold. Most people don't realize that flash drives go bad... so they don't bother to back up their data. I never have data on my flash drives exclusively. I'm not saying you have to make 200 backups... normally a copy on your hard drive and a copy on your flash drive is enough for consumers... the chances of both your hard drive and flash drive going bad at the same time is pretty slim. At the same time, I wouldn't use a flash drive as a primary backup... I always keep my hard drive backed up on at least one other hard drive. (more than one if my data is important.) Even though I used to do data recovery for a living, it's still cheaper for me to buy extra hard drives and raid controllers and stuff like that, then it is for me to recover my data from a bad drive.
If you data is really crucial, take it to a data recovery shop... and then learn from your mistakes.

It's probably toast. Save everything you can from the drive and replace it.

It's done. Anything you had on there is 99% likely gone. If it isn't vital, try reformatting it or getting a scanning utility to look for bad sectors. any bad sectors means it's time to get a new one.
