Rope splicing is done to join 2 ropes together to make a longer length, to make an eye in the end of a rope for mooring or other uses,
The splice is generally stronger then the standard rope and is a simple process using cheap easy to make hand tools. Ideal for the worl of sailing ships.

To join 2 ropes, create an eye splice or back splice a rope to stop it from unravelling.
A marlin spike is used on larger dia ropes, an awl type tool on smaller ones.
