installing attic access ladder Answered

Hello there,

I have an access hatch already cut into my ceiling. I am now wondering whether to get a ladder and install it myself or to hire somebody.

The access panel is over the steps to the basement. Here are the parameters involved:

hatch: 28in x 30 in
height to 1 st stair down: 8ft2in

Yes, the hatch is small but there are ladders that fit it. Here's one, for example:

So my question is, should I install it myself or is this not the sort of project one person can do comfortably, and it is best to just hire a couple carpenters to do that?

Thanks.

Boris.

You could look up the instructions or manual for installing the attic ladder and seeing if you are up to the task. If you are, give it a try and if you don't think the completed job is satisfactory, call in pros to redo the job. You will need a helper to lift and position the ladder unit in position until it is secured. So the question is, who cut the access hatch, was it already there or you somehow poked a hole in the ceiling? Good luck.

Thanks, I could - but if I am reasonably sure it is beyond what I can reasonably expect to complete successfully I'd rather just hire a pro. And given that it takes two people by all manuals I've seen I think I am gonna' just hire some pro's as I am gonna' have to hire a helper regardless - and if I am paying money for labor I may as well just hire people who would do the whole thing.

How can we answer that without any clues about your skill set and tools at hand? ;)

Well, my skill set is average - not a pro, but generally I can do work on wood and metal and most of the time nothing catastrophic happens:) As for tools - I have some, could get others if need be.

Here it sounds, going by the manuals, that at least two people are needed. Which likely means I am hiring somebody.
