led on a shirt Answered


I want to write my dj name on a shirt with led's. What would i need for something like this. I would like the name to flash or turn on one letter at a time. Or even maybe sound activated. Do i need programming skills thanks

i notice they have prewired leds, are those good for a person with no solder experience

Thank you for being so helpful. I am looking at these rgb led's change color, i think those would work nice.. I never soldered before, but it does not look to hard. Do i need to sew it on the shirt. I see they have these metal led holders. guess i can buy those and glue them to the shirt. thanks again

For basic flashing, you can just use a 555 timer chip, which requires no programming, and is fairly cheap. With a large number of LED's, you may need a transistor, as the 555 may not be able to deal with the current.

For power, a 3V coin cell should work, but might not last too long. Alternatively, you could clip a a battery pack to your belt/trousers, or put it in a pocket.

It's probably better to bulk buy 100 LED's off ebay. 3mm LED's are probably best for this application.

You can add a small switch to bypass the chip completely. If you get an on-off-on switch, you can use it to switch the power, and the mode.
