long belt sander? Answered

has any one made a long belt sander - around 1m lenth with old drill parts and preferably with out lathe work.... >

         If you think of devices such as band saws that run on various "tires" it becomes obvious that either a bulge or a dip in the center of the rollers  that hold the belt is the way to go. The idea being because there is a bulge in the center of the rollers the belt would have to get longer to travel sideways. A bulge rather than the opposite of a bulge works better on sanders because the platen will tend to wear quickly if there is an hour glass like shape in the rollers. It is wise to make a platen (it backs up the sand paper) that can be easily replaced as that is the weak point even in commercial sanders. Always using gentle pressure against the belt will help to keep the platen alive.

 Yes hello , I have been toying with a fixed belt sander that I designed and built . Same as the other fabricator am having problems keeping the belt centered or in one position . The sander I made uses 6" by 48" belts so the working size is 6" by 21" . As far as tracking the belts , I have 1 roller that is ajdustable and is also the drive roller , so I used 2" or 2.25" stainless pipe with sanding belt sand side out epoxied to the tubing (for grip) and the same pipe no sand paper for the idler roller . For the flat surface the belt runs over and the frame of the sander I went to the steel yard and bought a remnant piece of 6" by 2" u-channel iron a little longer than 2' cut it down to length and sanded the flat side with a 3" by 18" belt sander pretty close to flat , then cut a piece of stainless sheet to size and very quickly epoxied it flat to the channel iron . It is flat enough to mill cylinder heads on as soon as I win with the tracking issue . If You have any questions You can e-mail me at <chrisfrost@cox.net>  Good luck

hey love to see the picture and word instructable for your idea... sadly i gave up waiting for some one to give me a good idea some time ago and brought a long arm sander - works fantastically ... and perhaps was a little complex for to make .. but i amsure there are others out there that would appreciate it

I have made a belt sander .5 m in length. I used the Shopsmith sanding drums I found on Ebay and inserted a shaft mounted to pillow block bearings. Pull the belt with one shaft and pulley mounted in front and connect by belt to the motor in the middle of the assembly. The biggest challenge is belt alignment for tracking. I originally used pillow blocks with self aligning bearings mounted on one side of the assembly . The stress on the shaft when you tighten the sanding belt pulls the front and rear shaft toward the center of the belt (unless you capture both end of the shaft) and you cannot align the sanding belt. I plan to use flange mount pillow blocks at both ends of the shaft between the parallel side rails. I have'nt used any machining other that a drill press on the Shopsmith rollers to open them up for the shaft. I still have a work in progress, but belt tracking is the most challenging part and with such a long belt running at high speed it gets real finicky.
