As longs as the stuff does not grow too big everything will go, good drainage provided of course. Parsley, Oregano and basil do quite good in a 1.25L bottle, lettuce or strawberries not so much. You should use "soil" that has good water holding and darinage qualities, I prefer moss or coco fibres for it - both need a good soak and wash first to adjust the PH level. Either add some slow release fertilizer to the mix or water with a weak fertilizer solution once something starts grwoing and all should be fine.

the plant shouldnt have to large roots as they may die
make a hole at the base of the bottle to release the extra water
sprout gram etc will work too
