preventing being followed? Answered

How do I remove someone from the following me list? Frankly, I am more than a bit uncomfortable with people "following" me with whom I haven't even shared any communication.

Instructables is run by people who fully support the ideas that facebook and other ":big brother" companies use to monitor the lives of others. As such, they like it when people can intrusively monitor people without any ability of those people to block the monitoring activities.

Hey seandogue,

If you'd like me to know that you're writing something to me, please respond to one of my messages, otherwise I won't get any notifications. Posting comments that violate our be nice policy and get flagged and removed from our system, is probably not the best method.

As to not wanting people to see what you post online, if you don't want people to see it, don't post it or post it privately.

As to not posting. If you don't want people (which includes "big brother") to see what you're doing online, don't post it. When you put something online, you're putting it up for the world to see. There's all sorts of means of watching what you post that don't involve "following" you. People can tap into rss feeds, put google alerts out and a host of other things. If you don't want people to see what you're doing: lurk, don't log in, and use VPNs and IP blockers. That's option one.

As to posting privately. You have a pro account, one of the features of that pro account is that when you publish instructables you have the option of making it private. This bypasses any sort of function that allows people to follow you. If you make all of your instructables private, no one ever sees them but the people you send the link to. If the link ever gets in the wrong hands, there's an option to randomize the link so no one can access it anymore until you send them the new link. Basically, you could currently have 10 instructables published on this website and myself and everyone else using this site would be none the wiser to it.

Other options:
If you just hate everyone but the select people you want to see your work, there are quite a few options to get it to them directly and not have to go through third parties to do it. You can email or snail mail people. Both are effective and both have been around much longer then instructables so you know they work.

Finally, if it just has to be on a website and you need that step by step functionality, make your own website. It's quite easy to make a website, and there's a ton of programs that will do it for you if you don't have much html knowledge. Purchase a domain, put your site up, and let your friends know about it. You can put a password on your site as well, so only people you think are awesome can gain access.

All of these options are available to you to keep people from this website from looking at your projects. Please use whatever method you think is most appropriate.

Have a great day.

Man, I wish I had that kind of power. In fact, I'm flattered you think I do.

Fact is, you blocked replies from my comment by selecting your comment as featured. If you un-feature your comment you should be able to reply to me without a problem.

Have a great day!

The purpose of this site is to share things with other people, and to let others see things that you've made. If someone chooses to follow you, it's because you did something they found interesting, and they think you're going to make something cool in the future that they're going to want to see. Blocking and banning people from following you isn't something that is currently doable, and I don't think it's something that's going to be investigated too much, as I don't think it's something too many people want to do.

Is it that bothersome to have people you don't know following what you do? I could understand if this was like facebook, and people were friending you, and you didn't have a choice but to be in a friend status with them. But following requires not reciprocation from you. All it says is that there are people who are genuinely interested in what you're going to be doing and have a desire to be updated when you do something new.

Perhaps you can explain to me why you have such a problem with it and I can bring it up to HQ and see if they want to put time towards putting that feature in.

How do I remove someone from the following me list? Frankly, I am more than a bit uncomfortable with people "following" me with whom I haven't even shared any communication. And how, as a paying subscriber, do I get this question posted without waiting around for some screener to ensure that they can block it for as long as possible>?
