purple martin feeder
I require help in building a cannon to fire dead crickets and mealworms into the air about 25 to 30 feet so i may feed the purple martins in my area. they only feed on the wing and winter will surely kill the colonies in my area. any help will be appreciated.

The winter won't damage the colonies at all - purple martins are migratory, and will be spending your winter months stuffing themselves silly on South American bugs.
Caitlinsdad is right, though; and cannon large enough to scatter the bugs that far will also scare off every bird within a mile of you. Farmers use unloaded cannons firing irregularly to keep crops clear of birds.

Wow, sounds neat, could you please post a photo when it is finished?

For small portions a slingshot for bait (fishing supply shop) might work.
The have a little "bucket" for the bait and shoot quite far.

I dunno but with such low mass and wind resistance of the bugs, you might need an air compressed system or a big leaf spring trebuchet like launcher. Wouldn't the noise scare away the birds though?
