The instructable is sorely lacking content. It's supposed to be a step-by-step how-to to do something. Not a introduction to a video that isn't even part of the instructable, but a link. As to lighting a safety match away from the box... Just about any mildly abrasive surface will work. I like to light them from the thigh of my jeans, the zipper, sole of my shoe, thumb nail, teeth, etc. Showing multiple techniques could have made a great Instructable.

well all of those ways to light matches seem great... for strike anywhere matches, u try lighting safety matches on jeans for example, it just doesnt work!

In essence it appears you are lighting it by the heat of the friction of the strike. I would also surmise (correct me if I am wrong) that it took quite a few attempts before you got a "light" (there were quite a few "scratch" marks before the one lit that you have on video).

BTW- The way you ignite the matches, is it completly impromtu or do you need a battery or something?

You can do it on glass but it leaves a little line where you dragged the match head down the glass, Also if you spend time and are patient with good hand eye co-ordination you can light the heads of two matches of each other but that is hard to do.

I tried that glass method about 600 times and it still did not ignite, it did not even sparked.
