safety valve bbq propane Answered

I understand the pressure relief valve. I understand the float valve which prevents overfilling.

But is there any mechanism to prevent liquid propane from leaking if the tank tips?

How would it leak if it tipped over? If it leaks when tipped over then it got damaged when it tipped or was leaking from the start.

good question, Mpilch. Propane tanks have liquid propane which boils at... umm.... maybe 40 deg below zero Fahrenheit. In the bottle, under pressure, at ambient temp, it is maybe 100 deg above its boiling point. Like a pressure cooker, the boiling point is raised, so it only boils when some gas is released. Liquid on bottom, gas above. Gas is released from the valve at the top. If it tips, liquid is released from the same valve.

guess the forklifts i've used could handle liquid since the tanks where always on their sides. kewl

Forklifts actually use the extra pressure from the liquid gas with a special regulator, similar to the ones in your cars.
Liquid gas goes in, a lot of gas comes out, but it only works with heating as otherwise the regulator freezes to a solid block quite fast.

Yeah, I'm guessing that forklifts take a lot more fuelflow than your average BBQ

If you mean some sort of sequential valve that only allows gas but closes for liquid propane, then no.
Partially this "feature" is used for filling smaller gas canisters from a bigger one.
The big one is turned upside down and so only liquid propane will enter the empty cylinder.

Yup. that's kinda what i thought. The u-haul propane fella confirms this.
Thx, downunder.

ps. i may have asked this before, but is "downunder35m" a scuba reference? like "35 meters down?"
