I was trying to avoid the doom and gloom! Generally a failed piston ring will pass oil as well resulting in a very black exhaust and severe oil consumption.
Could be a hole in the piston head - Not unknown.
Of course the OP may not as yet have reached that stage.
Head off first and fingers crossed it has a simple solution.
Yes, I supervised the rebuild of a Ford "with full service history" that was driven from London to Manchester, and drank about 4 gallons of oil in the process - damned thing had never had an oil change in its life, and all the rings were coked so badly, there was only compression on 2 cylinders.

You have 2 main possibilities:
1. A broken or stuck or leaking valve,
2. A leaking head gasket
Engine dissembley required for both .

...or worse still, a failed piston ring.
Either of your modes "only" need the head off....mine needs the top AND bottom off....

If you need a price tag the best option would be to ask the mechanic of your trust or a Forad dealer.

Depends on why its not compressing !
