upgrading my PC need power advice?
hey all,
i'm going to be upgrading my PC soon and need to know if i'll need a new PSU to go with it.
CPU: AMD FX 8150
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
GPU: Sapphire ATI Radeon 7970HD
current PSU: Hytec 950w (can't get any better info than that)
Side question:
will an Asus Commando, intel q6600 & ati 5450 run on a 380w psu?
it will only be acting as a "server" of sorts no heavy lifting

Use this online calculator to estimate your PSU needs: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

i ran my system through that and it was giving me some "interesting" results
High end Desktop
Q6600
ati 7970 HD
4 ddr2 sticks
4 SATA HDD (2 normal, 2 green)
1 dvd burner
5 USB devices
7 case fans
= 450W
that don't sound right. mobo minimum is 500W

The peak and 'average' power rating on stuff often has some squish room. 450 watts is what it will run full bogged down - having the overhead is a good thing.
For example, my dual gtx460 + oc i5 rig should draw 500+ watts, at the wall I measure 350 at full load. I upgraded from a 450 watt to a 750 watt psu because within reason, a 750 loaded to 300 watts is more efficient than a 450 loaded to 300. Staying away from maximums and having overhead is a good thing. a 950 watt psu is overkill for most anything :D
