web site build Answered

Hi all guys and ladies ...  so glad i found this site looks like fun.
I found you all here due to a search i did looking on tips of building and hosting my own web site, and what i read here in great detail with no fuzz i just thought was the bees knees.
I do have one problem but, if i use my ip address to host my own server on an old machine and use a new pc for working here at home, the ip address will be the same, will this not lead to people trying to gain excess to my every day to day pc?

That is why you need to learn about routers, firewalls, dmz, and proper configuration of your web server.

A router is just part of the inside private network you establish at home. You can configure what people on the internet see and have access to on the outside. Note that your internet provider may block or prohibit you from running a web server on your connection to the internet, of course, there may be ways around it.

I just did my head head reading on static ip address and how to get one and how to port forward bla bla bla.. i running ubuntu 11.04 which from next week its coming of, i hit my head on a brick wall when trying to find out what my internal ip address is. Try to ask in ubuntu and there guiding me to something i not got on my machine.
The good news is i am setting this up within an office in China, i really don.t think they care what you do with your line as long as you pay your bill every year.
But i will take a few notes to try ways around them knowing of this.

This all seems straight forward and i think it can be done in a number of days.. providing i get the steps right. Have you done this ??
