Or the querant can just mark this thread as best answer, as it stands. (The BA flag does refer to the whole thread, not just the top-level post.)

Not true.  The Best Answer tag takes only the top-level comment and "locks" it to first position, just below the original question.  All of the replies under that comment are "left behind", effectively floating in such a way as to "appear" to be replies to some other comment entirely.
