Are you located in the UK? I think the coins there were over 90% silver prior to 1920, then they were about 50% silver up to 1950 something. After that they are cupro-nickel like every where else.
You need a coin made of silver -- almost any silver coin will do. Newer ones made of nickel/copper won't work because the material is too hard (not maleable/ductile enough).

They're cupronickel, it doesn't work like silver.
