lighting up about 50% of the planet at once...

thusly; photosynthesis, vitamin d creation, circadian rhythm management, keeping the planet in thermostasis so we don't all freeze to death...

and a few other things....photovoltaics, seeing things, ...

and, in the case of the soap, washing.

50%??? That's only a good average in baseball. The sun is clearly shirking its duties, and needs to be replaced by a humongous LED or something. I wonder what kind of resistor I'd need to wire that up?

depends on your power supply :D

I recommend orbiting a bunch of mirrors the size of jupiter, near  mars' orbit, that lights the earth from all sides equally at all times.  Screw global warming.

frollard, the only thing I can see that you missed is keeping the Earth in place.  Without the sun, the Earth would go off wandering the universes and we might find out what's at the end of the universe.

...sunLIGHT...

Granted, without the SUN we'd be in REAL trouble!  We'd fall into an orbit around jupiter and that would just be stupi...ter.

I dunno, enabling the existence of life on this planet is a pretty reasonable use for sunlight.

You can also use it to bake cookies.

I dunno, it's a tossup!

There's everything that frollard said, but they're unimportant.  We all know that tanning celebrites is the only reasonable uses of sunlight.
